Lessons I Learned the Hard Way as a Former Athlete

In college, I fell victim to this approach—and it cost me my athletic career. I had no idea how much my cycle and hormonal health impacted my performance, recovery, and overall well-being. Like many female athletes, I experienced sport-induced amenorrhea.
It wasn’t until my bones started breaking while competing as a Division I runner that I finally had a wake-up call. My training-induced loss of period was no longer something I could ignore.
I was prescribed birth control as the quick “fix” to protect my bones and restart my cycle. But like so many women, I quickly learned that hormonal birth control wasn’t addressing the root cause—it was masking it. My body needed more than a pill. It needed to heal.
If I could tell my younger self one thing, it would be this: your cycle is a vital sign, not a nuisance. Learning to listen to your body and adjusting your training to support and sync with your hormones can make you a stronger, healthier athlete. Supporting a healthy cycle isn’t just about performance—it’s about ensuring long-term sustainability. Birth control won’t support your training, but your body will—if you take the time to listen and honor its rhythms.
